My favorite things to review are books- I'm a crazy reader and love love love to tell the world about all that I have read, been reading lately and looking forward to reading. Today I'm going to tell you about my top favorite books (at this time at least! )
Harry Potter by J.K Rowling: I like to blog about this guy a lot, and for a good reason- the book series J.K Rowling wrote about him is so super fantabulous that I just can't get over how much I love him and his world. I'm sure most of you have read the books, if not seen the movies or at least heard of him (I hope), but if for some reason you haven't you really need to check it out. Harry Potter is a series about a boy, who ages into an incredible man, and the magical world he lives in. At age 11, Harry finds out he is a wizard- a very important one. He gets shipped off to Hogwarts, a school of magic, to learn how to become the finest wizard he can be. Along with his two best friends, Hermione and Ron, they face many challenges, adventures and learn how to be strong, intelligent, and thoughtful beings. Sigh- now I need to read them again!
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith: I've been reading and re-reading this book since I was about 11/12? It is a beautiful story about a young girl, Francie, growing up in Brooklyn around the turn of the century (1900's). She comes from a poor family, both of her parents are first-generation American, her mother works as a housemaid while her father is a union singer but also a drunk. The book takes you through Francie's life, starting from when her parents first met until the time that Francie goes off on her own as a young adult. She loves to read and write, and her experiences are so true and original it's as if you are living with her during her time in a different world.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern: This is a more recent story and it's the first of the authors which made me happy and sad to find. The book is about a magic competition, but magic that we cannot even comprehend. The court being a circus- one that is so magnificent, detailed in such excellent ways, that appears overnight. I have never wanted a circus to be more real in my entire life, just the descriptions of the food that is served is enough to entice you into reading. The book is beautiful, sad, encouraging, dreamlike- I don't want to give much away for the plot but it's a must read- and one that will stay on your shelves for years to come.
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness: This is the first of a trilogy of books (the third just came out a few weeks ago!) and it's one of my favorites because it is a perfect blend of fantasy, history, and romance. The story follows Diana, a history professor who was born to two powerful witches but yet doesn't seem to have any powers herself. After recalling a magical and "lost" book from the Oxford library she then becomes involved in an epic adventure to learn the origins of all the supernatural beings. While learning her birthright, about her powers, and meeting all sorts of interesting characters in the past, present and future, Diana experiences the world as she never knew it before. The character development is fantastic, they go back in time at some point- which I absolutely love, and in general the trilogy was so well done.
