Easy DIY for Kids Outdoors | Bird Feeder

Monday, August 31, 2015

You all have probably done this at some point right? I am not reinventing the wheel here - I just wanted to show you what we did last weekend when J brought home some random pinecones from NaNa's (that I'm sure he went out to gather with granddaddy and his grabber - child labor much?).

These Pinecone Bird Feeders have been around forever. They are so simple and relatively fast and if you keep birdseed around (we do) then you probably won't need to buy ANY supplies!

What you will need:

  1. Peanut Butter (Sunbutter would be great for the allergy crowd)
  2. A Pinecone
  3. A piece of Yarn
  4. Bird Seed

STEP 1: ATTACH YOUR YARN

Wind the yarn around the pinecone a few times and tie off with a knot. Then test it out to make sure it's secure for hanging.

STEP 2: ADD PEANUT BUTTER

Spread the peanut butter with a spoon or knife. Attempt to cover the pine cone well and peanut butter in some crevasses of the pinecone. Try to avoid globs that may drip when you hang it up.

and don't forget to taste the peanut butter to make sure it's the All Natural good stuff.

STEP 3: POUR ON THE BIRD SEED

This is where it can get a little messy, especially depending on how little the hands are helping you. We used a paper plate to catch our extra seed so we could pour it back into the cup and pour again. You might also wind up rolling the pine cone in the seed some on the plate and using your hands to pack it in. Keep paper towels handy!

STEP 4: HANG IT UP!

We just added ours to the existing bird feeders we have in our yard, but you can hang them from a low limb on a tree or from a fence post!
