Adventures in the Kitchen!

Our weekend was so fun and full of activity! Saturday, we got a quick visit from the grandparents, a lunch date, and then off to a party where there were bouncy houses, big slides, and lots of friends to play with! Ezra went down his first BIG slide with Daddy and loved it! That boy, has no fear! On Sunday we had plans for a football party but that morning we decided to do a fun breakfast for the kids and I invited Jonah, my 4 year old to help. He really loves helping in the kitchen and he made SURE I didn't start without him! I was so proud of him, he typically has a hard time trying new things, and isn't a big fan of chocolate - but I showed him the Nesquik and he said "okay, I think I'll try it". That may seem simple to y'all, but if you've ever had a kid who refuses often to just try you know this is a milestone!
He loved it of course!
That got me thinking and I want to talk about cultivating imagination and adventure for our kids! It seems some kids have that adventurous spirit and others, while they may have a beautiful imagination, aren't as quick to act out their dreams and adventures. So, that's where we can step in and help them develop this sense of magic that we wish we all still got to act out every day. We also as parents get to make beautiful memories with our kids that teach them a skill that they will take with them as they grow.
This winter, we may not be able to spend as much time outdoors as the temperature drops, but there is so much adventure to be had right around our kitchen tables if we just let our minds wander a bit.

I will not claim these photos or this food to be pin-worthy, but I will say they are try worthy! I took a few different approaches to make adventurous pancakes, then just decided to let Jonah tell me what he wanted and I'd try to draw it with a squeeze bottle of whole grain buttermilk pancake mix! It was fun, for me and for him! Although I was a little iffy about how my "drawing" came out, he was so happy with them. I even caught myself saying.. sometimes it's okay to play with your food.

The boys loved this! Both of them. They are playing with their food plus getting great nutrition. In Nesquik, they are getting a treat and some great vitamins and minerals. What they aren't getting is a boring breakfast and a bunch of artificial stuff! This breakfast was just as good as donuts and more fun than candy, and it was good for them too! I am so glad Nesquik inspired me to be a little more adventurous and let them play too! The kitchen is a great place to let the imagination run wild!

  1. This is exactly why I want to have kids one day!! I always see the pancake shapes and I always wonder if kids like it or not! I'm glad they do!! Maybe I'll make these for my god daughter! =)

  2. How fun! We usually don't let our son (the baby is too young for now ;) ) to play with his food, but I do see the pros in this cold weather! A new way to explore and expand that imagination. Great idea! I love the creations you all came up with.
