What is a basket wall anyway?

The first time I remember seeing baskets hanging on a wall and thinking, wow I really like how that looks, was on my favorite Canadian TV show, Heartland. There were always two or three beautifully woven native american baskets hanging on the wall in the kitchen of the big house at the ranch. It's a great show, but these are the things my brain is drawn to! So, for several years now, I have picked up baskets here and there at thrift and antique stores for next to nothing. I love recalling that I have a basket of a similar pattern or shape. A few years ago, I helped my sister add some baskets to her walls, but didn't feel like my home had the right space for such a display. Then one day, I just did it and decided to frame my television with a few baskets of varying sizes. Since then, I've moved some of the collection to live over my bed. I could never find the RIGHT thing to hang over our bed, so why not expieriment with something inexpensive and fun!

Photographing a wall collection is sometimes difficult as it seems much smaller on the screen then in person. For reference our bed is a king size and our walls are nine feet tall. The largest basket in the middle is over 18 inches in diameter, so this collection makes quite the statement. However, you can make a smaller statement in any area of your home with smaller or less baskets.

The basket wall look works for a variety of different styles, as I'm learning and seeing it so much more now. You can use this look in boho, rustic or modern farmhouse, traditional and even coastal style. It's inexpensive and easy to create in your home. You style of decor and sie of space will ditate what types of baskets you'll want to look for.

Once you've collected a few baskets, measure the space on the wall that you're wanting to fill and measure that same space on the floor. You could use a roll of wrapping paper or blue painter's tape to measure to lay out your space on the floor. Then start with your largest basket and work your way to the smallest.

For this particular wall, over our bed, I wanted a layered look, so laying the baskets on the floor helped to achieve the look I wanted. Then, I simply started with the largest basket and held it on the wall marking the spot for my nail and hung each basket one at a time. For the baskets that kind of stick out in front, I used longer nails. They are also supported by the other baskets. You might need a second pair of hands just to stand back and look until you get the look you want.

For Fall, I recently changed out some of my pillow covers to warm up the space even more and while I wish there were a few more big changes made to this room (ie carpet removal) I'm really happy with the impression it leaves when I glimpse from the door.
