I am a sauce person. I am a dipper, drizzler, sprinkler and smatherer. I am not really sure if any of those are actual words, but it's the best way I can describe my love for dips and dressings. I feel like a good sauce takes so many dishes to the next level. I have recently found a new love of the classic homemade Thousand Island dressing, it's so good with french fries, but I think I topped it with this homemade Comeback Sauce! After my zucchini fries were gobbled up, I may have found any excuse to use it. Sandwiches, grilled chicken, a crunchy salad... I just kept coming back for more (you see what I did there).
If you aren't from the south, then you may not know about the secret that is Comeback. It actually originated in a restaurant right here in Jackson, MS! I would say it's similar to remoulade, but a little more versatile since there is no horseradish in comeback sauce, but you can definitely kick up the taste with your choice of spices!
Since Comeback Sauce needs to be refrigerated for at least a couple of house before using it, I am going to share that recipe first, then we will get to those better for you zucchini fries.
Comeback Sauce Recipe
Ingredients for Comeback Sauce
- 1 Cup Mayonnaise (low fat is fine)
- 1/4 Cup French's tomato ketchup
- 1/4 Cup of Chili Sauce (you will find this kind of chili sauce on the ketchup aisle)
- 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 Cup Olive Oil (I used a garlic infused EVOO)
- 1/2 Tablespoon of cajun seasoning
- 1/2 Teaspoon of dry mustard
- 1-3 dashes of hot sauce

- 1-2 pinches of onion powder or minced onion dry
- 1-2 pinches of garlic powder
- 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice
Instructions for Comeback Sauce
Now all you have to do is combine all of those ingredients! For each of the spices and the Worcestershire sauce, add gradually doing some taste testing until you get a taste you like, but remember once the sauce sits in the refrigerator, the flavors will combine and the taste may be a little stronger.

Tip: Going heavier on the cajun spice and/or hot sauce will kick up your flavor a little more! |
If you want your comeback sauce to be a little thinner for a salad dressing, increase your olive oil.
Now, what can we make to dip in our new favorite sauce while it rests in the fridge for a few hours?
Baked Zucchini Fries
Ingredients
- 3-4 large zucchini or 5-6 smaller zucchini
- 1 cup bread crumbs
- 2 eggs
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- salt and pepper
Instructions for Baked Zucchini Fries
1. Pre-Heat your oven to 425 degrees (F) and lightly grease a large baking sheet with Olive Oil.
2. Wash and Trim the ends off of the Zucchini.
3. Slice the Zucchini. You can decide if you'd like traditional shaped fries cut long ways and in half or you can prepare them as chips by slicing the zucchini evenly (I obviously didn't quite get that part) into slices.
4. Combine two eggs into a shallow dish and place the breadcrumbs in an additional pan or shallow dish.
5. Dip Zucchini into the eggs and then into the breadcrumbs, then transfer to greased baking sheet.
6. Bake 30-35 or until golden and crisp on the outside.
We, of course, chose our fresh out of the fridge (after 2-3 hours) Homemade Comeback Sauce and the boys chose their favorite... ketchup.
They uses real ingredients, like real sugar and high quality tomatoes, which make it taste great! There's no high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, or artificial flavors or colors.
