Let's Go See | The Noxubee Refuge | Brooksville, Mississippi

While visiting family over Easter weekend, we decided to stay a few extra days and hang out since it was such a hectic weekend, I wanted the boys to be able to enjoy being at their grandparent's home a little longer and one of Jonah's favorite things about staying with MeMe is going on an alligator hunt! Not a real hunt, of course, just one where he might get to see some alligator, ducks, frogs, turtles and lots of birds! My little nature lover is all about discovering something new!  So, we headed to  The Sam D. Hamilton National Wildlife Refuge and got to see lots of wildlife.

I wasn't really prepared for taking any wildlife photos, so I just had my 50mm lens, but if you look closely you can see the first gator we spoted from the car. He/she seems to be waiting for lunch back towards the gras right in the middle of the photo below.

right click and chose open photo/link in new tab to see a larger photo where you can spot an alligator.

We saw birds and possible a small snake on Wood Pecker Trail, then stopped to hang out with this turtle on the side of the road on our way to our next stop. There's a large overlook across from this trail, where we spotted some woodpecker holes and some geese, but I was a little too busy making sure Ezra didn't climb the railing to get any great photos.

Our next stop was, Cypress Cove Boardwalk and it was so beautiful.

This is where we spotted out second alligator.

We weren't prepared to go on any major hikes, so the board walks and easy trails were perfect for the boys. Next time, we'll wear our hiking boots and go a little deeper in the woods.

We visited the refuge several times when I was a student at Mississippi State, since it's so close by but I had forgotten how big and beautiful it is out there. There is so much to do there and we really wanted to visit the museum/store but since we were there the day after Easter, we missed it this time. So, hopefully we will make it back this summer before it gets too terribly hot!
