Semi Homemade Doughnuts | Recipe

Disclosure: Nothing about the recipe is healthy in any way, except for the smiles it will get on a Saturday Morning! 

We don't go out much for doughnuts so when the boys have them it really is a fun treat!  I have posted before about our breakfast beignets we like to make and this post is very similar to that one, but it's really fun to make full sized doughnuts and this is SO easy. They are good too. I mean not Krispy Kreme good but better than most grocery store donuts in my opinion - even with all of their imperfections! 

I decided to try a variety of finishes. For beignets, we usually do mostly powdered sugar and some just cinnamon sugar, so we definitely wanted to do powered sugar and then try out some glazes. Well, my plain glaze wasn't setting up just right, so I nixed and grabbed the strawberry jam!

For these semi homemade doughnuts, you'll need just a few items: 

  • 1 can of canned biscuits
  • Peanut (or Vegetable) Oil 
  • Confectioners Sugar
  • Cinnamon, white sugar, jam optional

  1. If you are using a thicker canned biscuit, I suggest separating the top and bottom later and lay them flat on a cutting board. Using a small biscuit, cookie or another type of round kitchen item, cut the hole in the middle of your biscuit to make a dooughnut shape. I couldn't find the right size, so I used a washed bottle top. Just keeping it simple! 
  2. Pour ½ an inch oil into a skillet and heat on medium to medium high for about 3-5 minutes. Using a cast iron skillet, I feel like the heat picks up a little more quickly. 
  3. While the oil is heating, in one a bowl, combine cinnamon and sugar. In a second bowl, confectioners sugar
  4. Optional, in a third microwave safe bowl or cup with a spout combine 1/4 cup strawberry preserves or jam, 1 table spoon confectioners sugar, and a teaspoon of water and heat in the microwave for about 30 seconds, stir to combine. 
  5. Drop dough into hot oil, watching carefully and turning when golden. Once doughnuts are golden on both sides, remove to a paper towel lined plate. Repeat until all dough is cooked, including doughnut holes.
  6. For the doughnut holes, roll them in the cinnamon and sugar or confectioners sugar to coat. Repeat for doughnuts you want covered. For the strawberry glaze, place doughnuts on a cooling rack and pour glaze over each side. 
  7. Serve while they are still warm for maximum deliciousness.
